High Tech High
If I had a choice to work at any of the school just based on their view of education, I believe I would chose High Tech High because I really like the idea of project based, cross curricular learning for the students. It helps to build understanding with students and also will hit the students’ different learning styles. I like the idea of combining physics, with engineering and art when the students created the Rube Goldberg machines.
I also really like the idea that they train their own teachers and work on getting teachers credentials. It is great that they train their own teachers in the way that they want their school to be taught. It gives the school more of a feel of a clinical practice for the teacher, like doctors in the hospital they are going to work at. I also like that the school meets an hour before the students arrive to collaborate on projects. This will help to develop more involved projects that meet multiple subjects, not just one. I like the idea of bringing in art, music, English, and social studies on different assignments. It moves away from book learning and moves towards student inquiry learning.
Finally, I really like the school environment. There is a culture of the school and the teachers and faculty embrace it. The teachers respect the students, and the students reciprocate that respect. There is less of an institutional feel to the school, and more of a warm welcoming environment. It makes the teachers want to be at the school as well as the students. When the teachers want to teach at the school, then it makes it a positive environment that will reflect in the students work. It would also make the teachers want to stay at the school and build that teaching team that is needed for their type of curriculum.
